John is only the 16th recipient of this honour since 1992, and is the 5th member of the Rotary Club of Northallerton to be recognised in this way. The Deputy Mayor, Councillor Claire Palmer, conducted the ceremony in the Town Hall and presented a framed certificate to John, who unveiled the Roll of Honour which includes his name. The Mayor, John Forrest, was visiting New Zealand, but sent a message which was read to the audience of over 100 family members and friends. John Proud is well known in the local community for his tireless work to help others, and for his infectious enthusiasm and sense of humour. He joined North Yorkshire Police in 1971 and served with them for 30 years. He worked in the Yorkshire Dales and for a time was Officer in Charge of Northallerton Police Station. On retirement he became the Street Scene Manager for Hambleton District Council, handling all aspects of environmental crime. Over the years John has been a strong supporter of Round Table, 41 Club, and the Rotary Club of Northallerton, holding the Presidency in 2011. He has been a Town Councillor, supported the Friends of the Friarage Hospital, has a deep knowledge of IT, and has assisted many organisations with their websites. John also helps at the weekly Churches Together Northallerton Computer Group providing technical help free to members of the public. On behalf of his Rotary Club, he has visited Nepal every year since 2011, providing computers and IT training to schools in remote mountain settlements, establishing a goat farm to bring self-sufficiency to villagers, and assisting with earthquake relief. John Proud is a symbol of commitment to his community and an example to all. His Honorary Citizenship is a just recognition of his natural generosity of spirit, and a source of great pride for his extended family.
